If you are on 18.3 (below 18.8) on the ODA stack, you will still have to do 3 upgrades to get to Oracle Database 19c (in particular to Oracle 19.9 as of November 2021).

18.3 –> 18.8
18.8 –> 19.6 (this is the big one as you are upgrading from Oracle Linux 6 to Oracle Linux 7 and upgrading to Grid stack to 19c)
19.6 –> 19.9 (the latest release as of October 2021)

ODA Workshop Part 2 – gDBClone

Managing database test/QA and development (test/QA & dev) environments can be challenging and costly, in time and resources. Production databases often require 3-5 or more copies for various types of test, QA, pre-production, hot-fix, and development (lower environments) purposes. Each copy of a database consumes significant storage space and are typically recycled or refreshed on a periodic basis.

Refreshing and managing the lower environment databases does not have to be complex or time consuming. gDBClone is a tool that was developed to provide a simple and efficient method for cloning a database for test and dev environments. gDBClone leverages Oracle Automatic Storage Management Cluster File System (ACFS) snapshot functionality to create space efficient copies of databases and manage a test and dev database life cycle.

In this workshop, attendees will learn how to leverage gDBClone on ODAs to achieve operational efficiencies, reduce OpEx, save storage costs, and refresh lower environments almost immediately leveraging ACFS snapshots and sparse database provisioning.

gDBClone Reference Guide Document

gDBClone performs the following key functions:
» Clone: Creates a clone database (as Primary or as Standby) from a production database copying the DB to the target test and dev cluster
» Snap: Creates sparse snapshots of the DB to be used for test and development
» Convert: Converts a given database to RAC (Real Application Cluster) OneNode, RAC or from non-CDB (non-container database) to a PDB (pluggable database) of a given CDB
» ListDBs: Lists the cloned databases and its snapshots
» DelDB: Deletes cloned databases and/or its snapshots
» ListHomes: Lists the available oracle home
» SYSPwF: Creates an encrypted password file
» listSnaps: List the available ACFS snapshots
» delSnap: Deletes ACFS snapshot
» SYSPwF: Creates an encrypted password file

gDBClone is utilized to provision sparse space efficient copies of databases (“gDBClone snap”). These copies may be deployed for test and dev purposes. Only small incremental storage is required by the snapshots after the initial creation of the master copy.

Oracle ODA 19.5 Requires Re-Imaging

Oracle Database Appliance release 19.5 only supports Oracle Database 19c and requires re-imaging of your existing deployment. ODA customers cannot upgrade to Oracle Database Appliance release 19.5 from an earlier Oracle Database Appliance release. Customers cannot upgrade to later Oracle Database Appliance releases from Oracle Database Appliance release 19.5.

This release of Oracle Database Appliance only support Oracle Database 19c. Also, Oracle Database Appliance X8-2, X7-2, X6-2, and X5-2 are only supported for bare metal systems.

SPARC to ODA Migration

Viscosity has expertise in migrating SPARC workloads to the Linux environments.  Viscosity has partnered up with the Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) teams to provide an simplified solution around migrating customers from the legacy SPARC platform to the ODAs.  

Look at our data sheet on migrating SPARC customers to the ODA.  While we migrate customers to the ODAs, Viscosity can modernize your Oracle workloads to Oracle Database 18c or 19c depending your requirements and application compatibility to the version of Oracle. Viscosity can also help with your application migration to the Linux platform from Solaris (Or even AIX). We have deep expertise in Java and emerging technologies.

The re-platform tasks for the database tier will involve changing the endianness for the database files.  Viscosity has a semi-automated solution to change data endianness from Sparc to Intel format. Viscosity’s solution integrates years of migration experience of migrating Solaris and AIX customers to Linux.  Viscosity will document the upgrade the process and any workarounds; more importantly, Viscosity will script out a majority of the migration process to improve migration efficiency, as well as document the processes to reduce potential errors that can be encountered during the migration process. 

Near Zero Downtime Migration/Upgrade Option:

Optionally by leveraging Oracle GoldenGate or Quest SharePlex, the latest data replication technologies, Viscosity can perform a near zero-downtime database migration as a cost-effective solution.  If you want the additional insurance policy, Viscosity can reverse the data replication back to Solaris before the go-live from ODA to achieve a zero-risk exposure value proposition.

  • Both Oracle GoldenGate or Quest SharePlex can be purchased for term licensing for the migration/upgrade duration.  In full transparency, leveraging the Quest SharePlex product for the upgrade will be more cost effective.
  • Customers can upgrade their database along the way to Oracle 18c, Viscosity can re-platform and upgrade as a single solution. If you are running older versions of Oracle Databases version 11.2 which is already out of error correction as of December 31, 2018.  Oracle Database version 12.1 will be out of error correction at the end of July 2019.  Customers should upgrade to Oracle Database 18c or 19c for all custom application databases. 

Eliminate risk with a failback option, keeping the original platform in sync with the new data until all tests have been performed on ODA. 

GG ODAThe tool of choice for near zero downtime migrations to ODA is Oracle GoldenGate or Quest SharePlex. Leveraging either of these data replication tools, Viscosity can copy, replicate and synchronize databases from Sparc platforms to ODA.


Viscosity encourages dry-runs of the proposed zero downtime database migration and re-platform to ODA with their customers to capture and record potential issues with the real-time data synchronization to the ODA.   Depending on the customer’s schema, Viscosity may need to perform manual data migrations for select tables that has datatype discrepancies and conflicts with Oracle GoldenGate or SharePlex. 


Viscosity has tooling to compare potential discrepancies for the dictionary between the source and target database environments. Viscosity’s tools can perform data validations and compare delta data records between the databases on the Sparc platform and the migrated/upgraded databases on the ODA. Viscosity has certified experts in Oracle and Red Hat Linux and regularly participates on the panel of experts at Oracle and VMware conferences to:

  • share best practices for scalable Linux infrastructure
  • methods to achieve near zero downtime database migrations and upgrades


Viscosity will setup/configure the databases on Linux to migrate heavy Oracle workloads from Solaris to Linux with our custom scripts.

IT Transformation with ODA


United Physicians (UP), is a network of physicians that contracts with health plans, whose members have medical staff privileges at hospitals and healthcare systems. While the company’s network has grown, so has their IT footprint. Initially, UP deployed their databases and applications with all SSDs in a virtualized Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) X6-2. Oracle Platinum Partner, Viscosity North America (Viscosity), was brought in, to provide a solution for their ODA X6 patching and guidance in a go-live strategy.

Solution and Proposal

Viscosity reviewed AWR reports and I/O workloads to determine their IOPs, throughput and latency metrics to determine their future hardware roadmap. Based on their I/O requirements, Viscosity was able to assure UP that the new appliance would not only provide performance, but also have enough capacity for future growth. Viscosity also educated UP to consider information life cycle management with tiered storage on the ODA. After Viscosity spent time providing resources that could act as a trusted advisor, and walk through UP’s roadmap and its correlation to Oracle, UP became open to discussing the purchase of an ODA X7-2.

Agile Virtualization with ODA

Viscosity worked with UP through the process to have them purchase an ODA with SSD and HDD, giving them both the performance and capacity required for their production environment. After the ODA X7-2 was initiated, Viscosity experts were onsite
to standup the ODA.

Deep Virtualization

UP deployed four virtual machines for their application stack on the ODA X7-2, allowing them to fully utilize the ODA as their go-to virtual infrastructure. However, this proved to be a more difficult task than initially believed, as the latest patch was not as stable as expected. Viscosity honored their commitment for success and provided services, free of charge, to ensure that UP was patched to a stable update.

Memory Expansion

After production go-live, Viscosity was asked to patch the ODA X6-2, resell memory upgrades to the maximum configuration, and collaborate with UP to effectively utilize their Dev and Test environment as the ODA X7-2 will be for production. Viscosity will continue to be their trusted advisor, as they provide end to end monitoring with Oracle Cloud Control 13c.

Health Plan Provider Simplifies with Oracle Database Appliance



A leading Health Plan Provider, founded in 1997, has since seen continuous growth in Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. With more than 700,000 customers, the customer provides government-based health plans, and as growth continues, they sought an Oracle partner, with expertise in the Oracle Database Appliance as well as Oracle Data Warehouse.

Previously, the customer had purchased an X5 Oracle Database Appliance, and had struggled with utilizing it at full potential for their company. Oracle Platinum Partner, Viscosity North America (Viscosity), was brought in, in hopes to provide an assessment and patching for their ODA X5 issues and for guidance in a future roadmap with ODA strategy. 

Solution and Proposal

Viscosity experts performed an assessment of the customer’s Data Warehouse database, performed discovery on the servers and database, as well as assessed the current hardware configuration. Throughout this process Viscosity executed a comprehensive health check, gathered the key metrics and reviewed database parameters to maximize performance on the ODA.

Agile Virtualization

In parallel, with the comprehensive review of the customer’s environment, Viscosity upgraded and patched their ODA X5 DEV and PROD environments and databases to the newest releases.

The virtualization layer provided some challenges with the ODA patching processes, but Viscosity resolved issues quickly by persistently following up with Oracle support and communicating effectively with the customer. Within two weeks of the engagement kickoff, Viscosity was able to complete the upgrade of DEV and PROD. 

Hardware Recommendation

As part of the assessment, Viscosity recommended their roadmap for their next hardware refresh. By reviewing AWR reports and I/O workloads to determine their IOPs, throughput, and latency metrics, Viscosity is able to provide the right-sized recommendations to their future hardware roadmap.

After successfully upgrading their development and production ODAs within two weeks, Viscosity became their trusted advisor. With the thought leadership, Viscosity will recommend to the customer to upgrade to the SSD based ODA X7 HA.
